
I made this infographic to help compare the different lithium chemistries. The higher the energy density, the less it’s safe (thermal runaway) and the less it lasts (cycle life). The overall sorting is true for these parameters with an average cell but there are limitations. For instance, nickel based lithium chems (NMC and especially NCA) are newer compared to LCO and LMO, they have been the subject of many research last years, their energy density and also their stability is continuously increasing. The density of the LiFePO4 is also increasing, it’s reaching the density of old Li-ion chems.
